SOx emissions are caused by the sulfur content in the fuel and cannot be influenced by the engine.
Any sulphur burned in the combustion process will be emitted as SOx. Low-sulphur fuel is usually expensive and not always available, and removing sulphur from the fuel can be costly.
The sulphur has to be removed from the exhaust gas by the appropriate technique to fulfill different emission limits.
Two established methods are available:
- Conditioned dry scrubbing with hydrated lime powder
- Dry scrubbing with sodium bicarbonate powder
The choice of the suitable desulfurization method depends mainly on the water and absorbent availability.
